Harlan Dean Ulrich, Sr. was born August 18, 1943 in Coleridge, Nebraska to Harlan A. and Nola Mildred (Gregersen) Ulrich. Dean graduated from Coleridge High School in 1960. He enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Burton Island AGB1 (Ice Breaker) from August 1960-August 1966. He sailed to both Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, and various other places. Dean married Katherine Lawty, which he later divorced. Two sons were born to this union, Harlan Dean Ulrich, Jr., and Christopher Michael Ulrich. Dean married Carol Ann Bargholz June 24, 1972, to which 3 children were born, Wendy LeAnn, Adam Richard, and Jonathan Dean. They celebrated 50 years of marriage last year.
Dean worked for Milton G. Waldbaum’s (later Michael Foods, Inc.) in Wakefield, NE from 1971-2006. He enjoyed being a volunteer firefighter in Wakefield, in which he was chief for 22 years, and in 2005-2006 President of NSVFA (Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association). He was a 44-year permanent member of The American Legion. In his retirement years he enjoyed going to Ulrich Reunions, woodcarving, camping, watching old westerns, especially John Wayne movies, Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Morning Joe.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Carol Ulrich of Cumberland Furnace, TN; Children and families, Harlan (Sugano) Ulrich of Okinawa, Japan and three children, Megumi (Daisuke) Suto and three children, Makato Ulrich and two children, Yuu Ulrich, Celeste Ulrich, Camille Ulrich, and Sarah Ulrich; Christopher (Laura) Ulrich of Renton, WA, children, Layton Banchero and one daughter, Kayla and Keegan Uderitz and two children, Breanna Bloomquist and 2 daughters, Dane Ulrich and fiancée, Darion Jetson; Wendy (David) Kleckner of Genoa, NE, April (Codie) Green, Trevor Kleckner, Andrew Kleckner; Adam (Tami) Ulrich of Wakefield, NE, Ashley Adamson and fiancée, Eathen Sanchez and one daughter; Jonathan Ulrich of Des Moines, IA; brother, Wayne (Karen) Cookie of Wayne, NE; sister, Karen (Larry) Sherer of Wakefield, NE; sister-in-laws, Rita (Mark) Vanderlinden of Cumberland Furnace, TN, Debbie Bargholz of Wayne, NE, and Tena (Dan) Hendrickson of Dodge, NE; brother-in-law, Randal (Cindy) Bargholz of Wayne, NE; numerous nieces and nephews; and his fur babies, Dixie, Milo, Pepper, and Patches.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Duane Bargholz, and parents-in-law, Elmer and Mylet Bargholz.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 5446 Hwy 48, Cunningham, TN. There will be a brief visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
