Mr. Richard Lee Van Waes was born August 8, 1941 to Bernard Frank and Evelyn (Strand) Van Waes in Kewanee, Illinois. He passed away August 5, 2012 at Horizon Medical Center in Dickson. He is survived by: wife Joyce Van Waes; sons Stephen Van Waes (Cheryl) of Columbia, Missouri and Daniel Van Waes (Jennifer) of Murray, Kentucky; brother Gordon Van Waes of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; sisters Judy Callahan of Rock Island, Illinois and Susan Gofrier of Kewanee, Illinois. Three grandchildren and several step-children and grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 7th, from 5-8 pm at the Dickson Funeral Home. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the Jason Chapel Church of the Nazarene on Garner's Creek Road one hour prior to funeral service. Funeral will begin at 2 pm with Pastor James Spruill officiating. Burial will follow in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens. Mr. Van Waes served his country in the United States Navy (1963-65). In the corporate world, he served as a vice president of two construction companies and was a pioneer in the captive insurance industry, retiring as chairman of RMC Insurance Ltd., Hamilton, Bermuda. From 1983, he was self-employed, either as a partner or owner of various companies. He founded Veteran Defenders of America in 2004 and started the Grassroots movement in 2007.
